Nicola has worked with data privacy regulation in the UK and Europe for over 12 years. After studying history and law Nicola started her data privacy career at the Office of the UK Data Protection Commissioner as a Strategic Policy and International Officer. Since leaving the Regulator’s Office in 2000 Nicola’s career has included working as an independent consultant advising and supporting UK and multi-national organizations in a variety of industries from financial services, utilities, energy and transport, to local and central government.
She has also had experience working as an in-house Privacy Officer for British Gas and Accenture (UK) Ltd and as Principal Consultant to ‘Privacy Laws & Business’.
Her areas of expertise include UK data protection legislation, EU data protection laws, and UK freedom of information legislation.
Nicola is a member of the British Standards ‘Access & Privacy - Data Protection and Freedom of Information Editorial Board’ and IST/033 the IT - Security Techniques Committee which is commenting on the new ISO Data Privacy Standards.
She is the author of a number of British Standards Guides on data protection including the British Standard’s publication, ‘Data Protection: A Pocket Book Guide’ which she co-authored with Naomi Powell. She is also editor of BNA International’s World Data Protection Report a leading international law journal and an ISEB accredited trainer
